The Association for the Promotion of Japanese Education gave Kokusai Kotoba Gakuin (KKG) authorization to open a Japanese language school run by a stock company in Nakazawa, Shizuoka City. It opened with 90 students on October 1st 1991. In April 1994 it moved to the north of Shizuoka City. KKG opened a branch school in Shimizu City in April 1995. A year later, April 1996, another branch school was opened in Shizuoka City and started foreign language lessons. In April 1999, KKG moved to the present school building in Yahata, Shizuoka City. At the same time, application to increase the student quota up to 140 students was apprpved in October 1999 and to 230 students in 2000. With the steady growth in enrollment, the management of KKG had become more reassured. In July 2000, KKG applied for educational corporation status as Kakushu Gakko, a special school which has provided a wide range of courses, and became a school corporation in April 2001. Furthermore, from April 2002 an annex has been approved for class use. At the same time, KKG obtained permissoin for a preparatory education curriculum from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and for additional courses - foreign language lessons and language teacher's training program - from Shizuoka Prefecture. These additional courses are designated as lecture-grant courses by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Having increased the student quota up to 300, KKG has established a steady foundation to play a central role in Japanese language and foreign language education in Shizuoka Prefecture. KKG has also been contributing to the expansion of Japanese language education to China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and Eastern European countries by sending Japanese language teachers to, accepting students from, forming educational partnerships with, and running schools in these countries. Now the local community recognizes KKG as a Japanese language educational institution that has become deeply rooted in Shizuoka Prefecture. Based on the experience of Japanese language education, KKG proposed the establishment of a college of foreign languages in July 2003 and December 2006 to pursue foreign language education in the community and to tackle the problem of insufficient language teachers. Following Shizuoka Prefecture's approval of KKG's application in March 2007, we opened the College of Foreign Languages in April 2008. Although it has been a long journey, we are proud to get recognition as an educational institution able to administer and operate a Japanese language school and a college of foreign languages. As always, we weill do our best to maintain the loyalty of and continue our commitment to the residents of Shizuoka. ◆KOKUSAI KOTOBA GAKUIN EDUCATIONAL CORPORATION HEAD OFFICE
